Millions of people have used medication abortion — two simple medications — to safely and effectively end their pregnancies.
Medication abortion using a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000 and now accounts for more than a third of all abortions.
-
Evidence shows that medication abortion is safe. Serious complications are extremely rare and it is safer than many other commonly used medications.
-
Medication abortion is highly effective; it has a success rate of more than 95% for pregnancies up to 10 weeks.
Medical experts are clear: medication abortion is safe and effective, while fake abortion “reversal” procedures are not.
Despite numerous studies and reports showing this, in Louisiana:
-
Abortion care providers are forced to share stigmatizing, medically unproven information with their patients about medication abortion, including that it can be reversed. This is false and puts patients' lives and health in danger.
-
Patients are prohibited from using telemedicine to access abortion medication despite the fact that the in-person requirement does nothing to improve outcomes. Bans on telemedicine result in less abortion access for those living in rurual areas and others having difficulty traveling to healthcare facilities.
All of this is intended to confuse, shame, and harm pregnant people, not provide them with accurate medical information.
Patients deserve the truth, not politically motivated deception about medication abortion.
