The Time is Now: Policy and Practice to Reduce Maternal Mortality Risk in Louisiana’s Young Women

Lift Louisiana and LSU School of Medicine’s Reproductive Education + Advocacy Louisiana [REAL] Program invite you to join us for a special continuing medical education (CME) series focusing on current practice and policy in adolescent & young women’s health, The Time is Now: Policy and Practice to Reduce Maternal Mortality Risk in Young Women.

This two-credit event will feature local adolescent health experts, Dr. Ryan H. Pasternak, Division Head for Ambulatory Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at LSU School of Medicine/Children’s Hospital New Orleans and Dr. Julie Finger, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Tulane University School of Medicine Section of Adolescent Medicine. The session will also include a brief overview of the newly released 2011-2016 Louisiana State Department of Health Maternal Mortality Report and an overview of the 2018 legislative session and its reproductive health policy and practice related outcomes delivered by Michelle Erenberg, Executive Director of Lift Louisiana, an organization whose mission is to engage people across Louisiana in policy and legal advocacy for reproductive health, rights and justice.  

This event features two, evidence-based CME-eligible presentations with content from the nationally recognized Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Program [ARSHEP] curricula by Physicians for Reproductive Health:

Beyond Abstinence and Risk: A New Paradigm
Ryan H. Pasternak, MD, MPH

Identifies limitations of the common “Abstinence-Only” and “Sex-as-Risk-Taking” frameworks and describe an alternative paradigm of healthy adolescent sexuality.

Caring for Pregnant and Parenting Adolescents 
Dr. Julie Finger, MD, MPH

Educate providers ensuring their patients receive accurate and nonjudgmental information about parenting, counseling for adolescents who desire pregnancy, and describes models for providing primary care to parenting young people.
